Who says you can’t find out new things on a blog? Lucian’s biggest secret has just emerged, after this interview: his dream job – besides programming, of course – would be organizing sport competitions.

If you are surprised, you must not know his daily routine. He wakes up every day at 5:30, he starts his daily workout after fifteen minutes, which lasts until 7:15 AM. At this time, he starts preparing his kids for school. He finishes this important task at around 8, which gives him just about half an hour to reach his office. After 6 PM he dedicates his time to his family until about 10:30 PM, when he goes to sleep. Then he hits Repeat.

Sounds like the schedule of an athlete, right? That’s because Lucian loves the challenge and he seeks for it especially in triathlon competitions, a sport that he has been attending regularly for 2 years now.

But swimming, running or cycling aren’t the only arenas Lucian is competing. For almost a decade now – don’t remind him, because to him it seems like just yesterday was his first day on the job – he has been working with the Enea team in Romania at improving and extending his skills. Described in five words, this period translates into opportunities, team, diversity, multiculturalism and flexibility.

His proudest achievement so far is the role of Product Manager he had the opportunity of having in the company. It started as a challenge for him because it required switching from an engineer position who “goes about his business” to a person who tries to envision all the needed aspects of a quality product, like business reasons, forward thinking or added value.

He is now focusing on his current role of a Field Application Engineer that has come with new challenges and tasks, mixing Sales aspects and approach with the technical aspects regarding Client’s needs and requests. As in sports, Lucian believes that programming is a job that could be translated into a workout program that can lead to competing in “the big league”. In consists of five steps (junior staff and interns may want to write this down :)).

The first one would be observation and deciding whether this is the right job. The next step would be imitating those highly skilled professionals around you (it often involves a sort of self- satisfaction because at this point you start to congratulate yourself for managing to walk this path :)).

The third step would be joining a dedicated community, where you can exchange information and discuss important topics. The fourth step – and this is a big one – you start to want to compete. However, at this time you notice that there are a lot of other well trained competitors. This is when you start to train and learn some more. In the fifth step you achieve a work-progress cycle that eventually leads you into the big league and the much-desired success.

You may probably wonder what comes after that? Well, you hit Repeat!
